If you know something about motorcycles you probably have heard of the term ‘OEM parts’. OEM parts is an abbreviation of ‘Original Equipment Manufacturer’, this means that the parts you get to maybe repair your motorcycle are original equipment, and for that reason these parts are original but also newer. The fact that they’re newer might be something you’ll get them for, but is it a must to buy OEM parts, or is there another way?
Why would you get OEM parts?
As mentioned before, OEM motorcycle parts are parts made by the original manufacturer. This makes all the parts original and probably better to repair your motorcycle with. Since the parts will stay original, the value of the motorcycle often decreases, it does decrease when you change parts to unoriginal parts. That takes value away from the entire motorcycle whenever you would want to sell it.
It also means that every part is specifically made to fit your motorcycle, you probably won’t have as much trouble with the repair of certain things, or just problems at all, if you decide to get OEM parts. The quality is much better and the parts are more durable so will last you longer.
Is there a reason you shouldn’t?
Most of the time OEM motorcycle parts tend to get a bit more expensive. While that might seem like something that is on the down side, it’s also a good thing. The parts might be more expensive, but they’re also of better quality which most likely weighs out the other costs you might have when you decide not to get OEM parts. You might risk the fact that certain things will break sooner because of the quality you get for a lower price, and again the value of the motorcycle decreases when you don’t get original parts.
Other pros
We haven’t really been able to discuss pros and cons, this is because – other than the price range – the OEM products might as well only work in your favor. It’s something you have to be able to afford, but when you can and do, you most likely won’t regret it.
Another good thing about OEM motorcycle parts is the fact that – since they’re from the original manufacturer – you get a full manufacturers warranty. If at any time you feel like the product doesn’t work as well as it should, you have the right to go back and get a refund or get help. Most of the time they’ll offer you a new piece or offer you some other sort of help.
